Youth-Led Designs Promise Major Housing Upgrades

group of pupils accepting their award for a local competition

An exciting competition launched before Easter! Senior pupils at Boundary Oak have been hammering out ideas for a brand-new construction competition launched by Pye Homes, one of the developers building new homes at the Welborne Garden Village development near Fareham. The competition not only challenged pupils to think creatively but also encouraged them to explore future careers in construction, engineering and design.

The initiative, launched just before Easter, became a fierce inter-house competition led by Mr Davis. Pupils were challenged to design innovative features or solutions that could support the growing Welborne community and help shape the homes of the future.

The project encouraged pupils to think about how new housing developments can meet the needs of modern families while also considering sustainability, technology and creative design. It also highlighted the wide range of careers available within the construction industry.

There were some fantastic prizes on offer. The winner from each year group received £50, runners-up were awarded £25, and the overall winner earned a two-hour session with an industry expert, providing valuable insight into careers in construction and design.

Forget the textbooks, this was where the real magic happened. The competition turned traditional learning on its head, giving pupils the opportunity to showcase their creativity, problem-solving skills and imagination. It allowed many pupils to shine in ways that are not always possible in the classroom.

The competition was extremely popular, with many pupils enjoying the challenge. One Year 8 pupil described it as, "the best project I have ever done!" because it gave them the opportunity to demonstrate their creative skills.

Mr Davis announced the results on Monday 6th July, and the standard of work was outstanding. The overall winner was Bruno in Year 8, whose imaginative design impressed the judges.

Bruno explained that his design included an inverted parabolic roof and an automatic door. He said he had loved taking part in the project and was delighted to be named the overall winner. Ultimately, the competition proved that the future of Welborne's housing is in capable hands. Pupils did not just design impressive buildings they demonstrated that the best ideas come from creativity, innovation and thinking outside the box.

The Inter-House competition may be over, but the foundations have certainly been laid for the next generation of designers, engineers and architects.
