Showcasing Confidence and Eloquence in Whole School Inter-House Competition

  • Junior School
  • Senior School

Pupils demonstrate exceptional public speaking skills in the annual Inter-House event.

Throughout the academic year, pupils participate in a wide range of Inter-House events that span sports, academic challenges, and creative community activities. These events help to nurture qualities like confidence, resilience, and responsibility, reinforcing the values of the House system.

In the Autumn Term, pupils from Years 1-11 showcased their public speaking skills in a competition that involved delivering a monologue based on a given theme. The competition offered a platform for pupils to develop their speaking abilities and express their creativity.

For our youngest pupils in the Junior School (Years 1-3), the challenge was to either recite a poem from memory or with notes. In Years 4-6, pupils had the option of reciting an existing poem or composing an original one, with each performance lasting between 1 to 3 minutes. The entries were exceptional, as we were treated to several original compositions that left a lasting impression. Special recognition goes to Dottie in Year 3, who impressed with her performance of ‘Smiling Is Infectious’ by Spike Milligan, earning first place in the Pre-Prep category, and Florence in Year 6, who won first place in the Prep category for her captivating rendition of ‘Rat It Up’ by Adrian Mitchell.

In the Senior School, the pupils were tasked with composing a speech on one of the following thought-provoking topics:
•    "If I had three wishes..."
•    "If I had a ghost as a roommate..."
•    "The best advice I have ever been given..."

Each speaker embraced the challenge of stepping outside their comfort zones to deliver thought-provoking and compelling speeches. From moving stories of grief and resilience to reflections on the protection of loved ones, the pursuit of peace, and the hope for a world free from terminal diseases, our senior pupils showcased vulnerability, bravery, and strength. Their performances were a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy and the value of expressing unique perspectives.

Congratulations to Bruno (Year 7), Clementine (Year 8), Isobel (Year 9), Bonnie (Year 10), and Emilie (Year 11), who were awarded first and second places in both the Lower and Upper Senior categories.

We are proud to provide a nurturing environment where children can develop as leaders and critical thinkers. Public speaking is an essential skill that equips our pupils with the confidence to become global citizens, ready to make a meaningful impact in the world.
