Pupil Voice in Action: The Purple Token Initiative

  • Junior School
  • Senior School

At Boundary Oak School, we know that pupils thrive when they feel valued and are given regular opportunities for their voices to be heard. That’s why, this academic year, our Student Council has helped introduce The Purple Token Initiative - a brand-new, Whole-School programme that celebrates kindness, responsibility, and good manners, while strengthening our sense of community.

How the Purple Token Initiative Works

Purple Tokens are awarded for kindness, good manners, responsibility, and for embodying our school values each day. They complement classroom rewards by focusing on the wider school experience, from playgrounds and corridors to lunchtimes and school events. The initiative includes every pupil, from Early Years to Year 11, and all members of staff can award tokens, reinforcing the message that positive behaviour matters everywhere. This consistent, inclusive approach helps pupils feel noticed and encouraged, motivating them to make thoughtful choices throughout the day.

“I like that anyone can give you a token. It makes me want to do my best all the time,” says a Junior School pupil.

At the end of each term, pupils use their tokens to vote for a shared celebration or reward, deciding together how their collective efforts will be marked. In doing so, pupils see that kindness, consistency, and good character are valued just as highly as academic achievement, helping them develop a growing sense of self-assurance and pride.

Coming Together to Celebrate

Last term, pupils voted for and enjoyed two much-loved celebrations: an ice-cream sundae afternoon and a festive hot chocolate station. These events brought the Whole School together in simple yet memorable ways, creating moments of shared enjoyment across year groups.

Senior pupils enjoyed choosing their treats and spending relaxed time with friends, while our Junior School pupils felt warmly included as older pupils naturally modelled kindness and consideration. Staff also joined in, sharing conversations and encouragement, and helping to create a calm, welcoming atmosphere that reflects the caring values of our school community.

“The Purple Token Initiative brings our school values to life. It’s about recognising the small, everyday choices that contribute to a positive school culture. For our pupils, this is a chance to encourage a sense of pride and ownership within their community,” says Lisa Caruana, Director of Personal Development.

Empowering Pupils to Lead and Choose

One of the most powerful aspects of The Purple Token Initiative is its focus on everyday actions that can easily go unnoticed. By recognising consistent kindness, quiet responsibility, and thoughtful behaviour, the initiative highlights the importance of character as much as achievement. Pupils who make positive choices become role models for others, helping to shape a culture built on respect, empathy, and mutual support.

By placing pupil voice at the heart of daily school life, The Purple Token Initiative does more than celebrate good behaviour. It nurtures confident, respectful young people who understand that their actions matter, their voices are valued, and they each play an important role in cultivating the positive, inclusive community at Boundary Oak School.
