Reception at Boundary Oak
Learning through play and exploration
Reception at Boundary Oak is a happy adventure for children aged four to five. Each child is given close personal attention, helping to maximise their educational, personal, and social experience.
As children take their first steps into learning in Reception, we ensure every day is an adventure. There are plenty of opportunities for exploration, hands-on play, songs, laughter and fun alongside sessions that begin to lay the foundations of reading, writing and mathematics.
We provide abundant opportunities to explore the great outdoors to develop children’s confidence and self-esteem through the power of play. Children gain so much as they run, climb, learn, and discover the natural world in our extensive woodland grounds.
The curriculum evolves and deepens as the year progresses, gradually building on key skills and concepts to support children’s growing abilities. Children also benefit from weekly lessons with subject-specialist teachers in music, outdoor learning, French, and PE.
By the end of Reception, most children will have completed the Early Learning Goals and are ready and excited to transition to Pre-Prep.
Boundary Oak bear
Children who join us in Reception are given a Boundary Oak bear and a journal to document their summer adventures prior to starting school. The experiences they document give us insights into what they love so we can tailor their learning to better connect with their interests.

A typical day in Reception
In Reception, children follow a flexible timetable that blends play-led exploration with focused learning opportunities. Daily learning sessions, such as Monster Phonics and Motor Movers, develop key skills in reading, writing, and physical development, seamlessly integrated with time spent with subject specialists. The day begins with registration at 08:35, includes a midday break for lunch and play from 11:50 to 13:00, and concludes with a heartwarming storytime before hometime at 15:30. A weekly highlight is the visit from Headmistress Sophie Savage, who celebrates the children's achievements with their proud pegs, fostering a sense of accomplishment and joy.
