Outdoor Learning
Boundary Oak’s 30-acre woodland is an awe-inspiring place for our youngest learners.
Our pupils love going on adventures!
Pre-schoolers enjoy regular access to the woods at forest school, guided by a qualified leader. From Reception onwards, pupils engage with outdoor learning.
As they discover its wonders, they build vital skills, confidence, and a lifelong love for the outdoors.
Example activities
Outdoor learning at Boundary Oak offers children a rich, hands-on environment where they can safely explore and grow.
They develop gross motor skills through activities like climbing trees and balancing on the slackline, while fine motor skills are cultivated through painting, crafting, and even practicing fire lighting.
Pupils also engage in exciting explorations of flora, fauna, and fungi, boosting their language, reasoning, and knowledge of the outdoors.
- Tool use (hammering, fire lighting, whittling, wood splitting)
- Building habitations such as dens or making mini habitats like bug hotels
- Scavenger hunts
- Natural crafting with clay, natural paints, mud, playdough, etc
- Physical play on the slackline
We embrace the outdoors in all but the most extreme weather conditions, ensuring our children are always immersed in the joys of nature.
We are proud to have been shortlisted for the Sustainability and Environmental Education Award.
Outdoor Learning Journey
The Outdoor Learning Journey pupils take from joining us in the Early Years to Year 11 is carefully plotted to encompass growth in all aspects of their lives.
In the Early Years, we introduce nature and the natural world to aid learning and as a catalyst for sparking curiosity in our youngest minds. The confidence to try something new is ignited and nurtured from the first day at school.
As the pupils mature and progress, outdoor learning lessons will become more structured and eventually evolve into residential trips and visits in Senior School.
